Open Call to managers and to business researchers: your testimonials and suggestions, for my Research Methods module, please

Inspired by my colleague Chirantan Chatterjee, I am making an #OpenCall for suggestions of resources for my Research Methods module, which is starting this week.

Over 11 weeks, 96 MSc Management students will be exploring the relevance of research for managers, and how to plan and execute a research project. The first assessment is a mini literature review on one of three topics selected; the second one is a critique of Generative AI’s solution to a data collection and analysis problem.

So, here is my call for support.

  • I would really like students to appreciate the relevance of this module beyond their masters’ dissertation. So, I would like to collect testimonials from managers about the importance of research in their businesses. Could you leave a short comment below, or, if you feel generous with your time, send me a video message to a.i.canhoto@sussex.ac.uk?
  • Live case studies are my favourite method to teach and assess students! If you would like to volunteer a problem for class exercises or for the second assessment, please get in contact with me at a.i.canhoto@sussex.ac.uk.
  • We are using the textbook “Management Research – Applying the Principles of Business Research Methods”, plus a selection of papers and videos. In addition, I would appreciate suggestions for interesting articles and other resources that you feel that these “managers-in-training” should be aware of, in order to develop research skills, confidence and criticality. Either leave a short comment below, or send me your suggestions via a.i.canhoto@sussex.ac.uk.

I will also take this opportunity to ask you a question: Robin Croft and I have been discussing the value of writing a short textbook for business students focused on secondary data (i.e. using data that is out there, already). It is our belief that many companies rely on secondary data (at least, in the initial stages of a project). Could you answer these four questions for us?

Thank you in advance for your contributions.
