July 2023 round-up

July was such a fun month! I am sure that that feeling was largely influenced by my 2-weeks’ holiday with the kiddo, which included a haphazard (but heartfelt) celebration of his 16th birthday. Though, that feeling also came from working on a handful of exciting projects, on the other half of the month.

On the research front, the main event has to be the submission of two expressions of interest for research grants. One of the proposals aims to develop a tool to detect online misinformation about health topics. The other aims to develop a toolkit for SMEs adopting AI-based marketing applications.

Another key event this month was the presentation at the AMS WMC, where I also had the opportunity to catch up with Jan Kietzmann, Ben Keegan, Jillian Farquhar, Emmanuel Said and many others.

Writing wise this was, again, a slow month. I worked on the revisions of two papers and passed them on to the respective co-authors.

I also had a meeting with Luis Martinez about a special issue that we are guest editing, on the topic of “Sustainability, innovation, value creation, and decision making”, for the “Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal”. Submissions are now open, until 30th September 2023. We also read the papers that have been submitted so far, and decided which ones to send on to experts in the area for review vs desk-reject. Linked to that, I also sent e-mails to various colleagues to invite them as reviewers.

I also reviewed a paper for a journal (as service, not as author)

On the teaching front, there were exam boards to confirm the grades. And, again, many, many meetings with my dissertation students, plus reviewing their research plans and drafts.

I also reviewed some documentation related to my role as external assessor for the Portuguese higher education regulator.

On the service front, I applied for and was interviewed for the role of Director of Doctoral Studies at Sussex… but didn’t get it. I was a bit disappointed, as I really believe that this was a role that would allow me to contribute to a strategic part of the Business School (linked to the School’s research environment) and to positively contribute to the lives of early career researchers, while leveraging on my people development skills and experiences. Alas, someone had better skills and/or more relevant experience for the role than me. I am sure that I will find another interesting role, soon.

I was also invited to join the Editorial Board of the Service Industries Journal. The Service Industries Journal is a publication that I read regularly and cite in my own work. I very much appreciate the evolution that the journal has experienced under the leadership of its current Editor-in-Chief, Levent Altinay, and its emphasis on social sciences. As such, I was delighted to accept the invitation.

How was your July?

  1. Each time I read your monthly round up of news, I think “Ana gets so much done! Nothing happens in my month.” So I checked my records for July and found that a lot did happen. We had started building a new house with digging deep foundations, but heavy rain early in the month meant the trenches started collapsing, involving more work, money and delay. Work wise I was supervising 30 masters student dissertations. In June and July I started running again, after a gap of many years. This was in preparation for my first competitive race for more than 30 years, a 10 Km event through the city of Norwich. I then caught up with a friend of mine from more than 60 years ago in the charming seaside town of Southwold. And finally at the end of the month another international train trip to a family get together in Vaals, Netherlands. This included a 50 km bike ride crossing into Belgium, Germany and back, dodging the rain showers. So actually, a busy month: I am grateful for the chance to go back and check it over.

    1. That’s one of the main reasons why I started doing monthly round-ups. The other reason is that the knowledge that I will need to write up these round-ups motivates me to get work done across all key areas (i.e. not neglect any area).

Glad that my musings have helped you realise how busy and productive you were – and you even forgot one item: discussed idea for a methods book 😉

Looking forward to reading what you got up to in August and September.
