#followfriday (or #ff) is a tradition started by Micah Baldwin (according to Mashable), whereby you name Twitter user your followers should know about. In addition to naming interesting users on Twitter, I provide a bit of background information on them in here. Enjoy!
To celebrate 20 years of making the software required to run a web server available to all, free of charge – effectively giving anyone the tools to share information on the web – CERN launched a project to restore the first website. Information about the project and its goals is available here, including a blog documenting the project’s progress. And as this is 2013, and not 1993, there is a Twitter account, as well: @thefirstwebsite.
The tweets are a bit nerdy – well, for me, at least. Maybe you know what on earth a ‘NeXT hard drive’ is, or an ‘Hypertext 91 surface’, but, me?! I have no idea. What I do know, however, is that this is a very exciting project, celebrating the life changing decision that would give us the free, open web. The twitter account allows the public, in a small way, to share the journey of restoring that key digital asset. Enjoy the ride.
