Musical diary 2019

I got this idea from Austin Kleon. In a blog post at the end of last year, he wrote:

“At the beginning of every year, I make a new playlist on whatever streaming service I’m using. (Used to be my beloved Rdio, now it’s Spotify.) Every time I hear a song I dig, I add it to the playlist. (I may have stolen this idea from Frank Chimero, but I don’t remember for sure.) I occasionally delete tracks, but for the ones I keep, I let them sit there in the order I heard them. I keep this playlist synced to my phone, and I often just hit shuffle when I’m on a plane or I need to zone out and work.”

My playlist is not made of songs that I liked, but rather of songs that remind me of special moments from the year. For instance, “Beggin’” reminds me of a show that I watched with child #1, and “100 Bad Days” of a conversation that I had with Child #2. “Stereo Love” takes me back to our summer holidays, while “Numb/Encore” honours the memory of someone that died too young.

My musical mementos of 2019 are here. What are yours?

  1. I suppose I have to include Unhained Melody in 2019. I played this on saxophone at our son’s wedding in September, while my OH sang. it made the day very special, and encouraged me to play a lot more.
