October brought some beautiful sunsets, the last flowers from my garden, lots of leaves on the sidewalk, a concert with the family and, possibly, the last outdoor swim of the year. I started doing physio and my knee is already feeling better.
I am grateful for a job that allowed me to accompany Child 1 to a minor surgery. But also worried about the future of the Higher Education sector in England. This post by my colleague Michael Beverland delivers a poignant analysis of what went wrong and what needs to be done.
Research
The grant application that I mentioned last month has been submitted. Work started on another grant application (with a different team). Plus, the team working on the health misinformation project have reconvened, and we are keen to crack on with data collection.
Writing
I worked on the revisions for the paper that I mentioned last month (the one where I had to ask for a deadline extension), about digitalisation and wellbeing.
I also worked on a paper about customer insight, and another one about the use of generative AI for sentiment analysis.
In addition, I contributed to a joint reply to a government consultation about the use of AI for predictive policing.
Teaching
I taught on the new module (about qualitative methods for PhD students), and designed the assessment brief. Moderated a module, and prepared the paperwork for changes to other two.
Service
I did two presentations for the SeNSS students about the importance of conducting a development needs analysis, and how we do that within the SeNSS Doctoral Training Consortium; prepared some reports; and held various meetings regarding training provision for the SeNSS network.
Reviewed two papers and a grant application.
Oh, and I also applied – and interviewed – for the role of Chair of the Faculty Research Ethics Committee for the University of Sussex Business School. Fingers crossed…
How was your October?

Hope your interview goes well!
